TEACHING TIPS FOR TOEFL PREPARATION Test preparation for the next generation

This works for me. I hope it is helpful to you and your students.

1. Begin with a positive message.

2. Write three important goals for the class so that students can see them.

3. Arrange for practice tests to be taken in a lab or at home on the honor system. You are a teacher, not a proctor!

4. Allow students to grade the Reading and Listening sections of their practice tests.

5. Ask students to write their questions on note cards and bring them to class. When several students have the same question, prepare a short presentation for class. Answer the other questions individually before or after class.

6. Make overheads of test questions and show the students how you choose an answer. Talk them through your thought processes.

7. Use class time to teach and practice Academic Skills.

8. Focus on Speaking and Writing sections in class. Assign speaking tasks and writing tasks as homework.

9. Don't worry about covering all the material in the book. Getting to the last page doesn't mean that the material has been learned.

10. Provide counseling and encouragement as part of the class routine.
